Abstract

The traditional e-commerce is based on scale economies and centralized warehouses, with delivery time of 1 to 7 working days. This paradigm has been challenged by what is being called ‘quick commerce', or ‘q-commerce', which leverages decentralized, hyperlocal ‘dark stores' to deliver orders in less than 30 minutes. The model has been around since the early days of low-margin groceries but has been challenged by low Average Order Values (AOV) and high last mile logistics costs. Platforms are bringing in high margin consumer electronics and tech accessories to shore up unit economics. This is a strategic category expansion which is expected to benefit from the high margins (10-25%) (Blinkit’s Dark Store Network & AI Logistics |Jain ,2026.) and support the cost of delivery networks. Based on the Stimulus-Organism-Response (S-O-R) approach, both delivery speed and convenience perception are found to narrow decision horizon and facilitate impulse buying. But the operational challenges associated with small-format dark stores are unique when it comes to handling high-value electronics: The ability to manage complex reverse logistics is limited, and the need to store high dollar items requires significant investment in secure storage and unboxing verification processes to reduce the risk of shrinkage. Geographically, metros continue to be the limit of scaling up beyond. In conclusion, q-commerce moves towards an instant e-commerce discipline with a margin focus, and is forever changing urban distribution.
